PORT ST. LUCIE — Three Northport sixth graders are winners in the American Security Council Foundation’s good citizenship essay contest, “Step Up America.”

“What Freedom Means to Me and What Protects Our Freedoms in this Country” is the essay topic.
First place grand writing champion is Jayden Diago, who will visit Washington, D.C. with a parent or guardian, all expenses paid, for a tour of important monuments and places, and to attend the National Wreath Laying on Dec. 16 at Arlington National Cemetery.
Lahela Cornett, second place, received a $100 gift card.
John O’Rourke, third place, received a $50 gift card.
Jayden closed her essay by saying, “When I become an adult, I will do my best to become a good, productive and law abiding citizen, pay taxes, pay kindness forward, support law enforcement and military, exercise my rights, especially to vote so I can have a voice and help the government continue to uphold the Constitution. We must work together to retain freedom and acquire peace.”
